Abstract

This school reader has two sections: "Maybe It Happened" and "It's All Make Believe." The latter section contains both "Clever Brother Rabbit" (217) and "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" (234), identified as an "Old Tale." The former involves three years' plantings on which Brer Rabbit outsmarts Brer Bear. When the Bear chooses tops for his share, Brer Rabbit plants potatoes. When he chooses bottoms, Brer Rabbit plants wheat. When he chooses tops and bottoms, Brer Rabbit plants corn, since all the ears are in the middle. BW includes three good colored illustrations. The boy gets away with two false alarms. My guess is that this is perhaps a fourth or fifth grade reader.
