Abstract
I grabbed this impressive, well-preserved large-format book from a bouquinist's stall sure that it would tell, in Rabier's own colorful way, the story of Chanticleer as we know it well from Chaucer. It looks like I was wrong. Rabier's Chantecler is a plucky, brave cock who gets away with a lot of escapades. A recurring part of his story shows up very early: he gets even with those who thwart him. In fact, he seems to help other animals on the farm to get even. Chantecler helps people, too, as when he helps apprehend two thieves escaping from the house. The closest we seem to come to fable material here is the competition between Chantecler and Tigrette. Chanticler leads his group of hens at her funeral. There are lots of good stories here, but one looks in vain for the fable behind Chaucer's glorious "Nun's Priest's Tale."
