Abstract

The readings today give us a marvelous description of the Trinity. Listen to the words Paul uses to describe the Father, the Creator:||Reading 1: Acts 17:15-22 - 18:1 Paul is speaking to the Athenians and says: " ... you are very religious ... I even discovered an altar inscribed, 'To an Unknown God.' ... I proclaim to you the God who made the world and all that is in it, the Lord of heaven and earth."|Gospel: John 16 Listen to the words Jesus uses to describe the Spirit, the Sanctifier:|"Jesus said to his disciples: 'I have much to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears ... "|Listen to the words Jesus uses to describe Himself, the Redeemer:|"He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.. Everything the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you."|In the Gospel, Jesus is treating us - through the disciples - as close friends. He shows that He wants us to understand all that we can. He also knows that our minds are not equipped to grasp all the truth that he is telling us.|But once again, He comforts the disciples and us and says, " ... when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth."|This is the season for many young men and women to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. This is the time for us to renew our own dedication to the Holy Spirit. We need to ask the Holy Spirit to renew our minds and hearts to see the great love God has for each of us.|The Trinity encompasses everything we need in life; that is, to understand our unique purpose in this world and to be happy with our Loving God forever in the next.|Let us pray: Dear Father, Son, and Spirit God, increase our faith, hope, and love daily. Help your children to mature in our understanding of Your presence in our lives. We ask these things through the intercession of Mary, the virgin mother of us all. Amen.
