Abstract
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common transmitted sexually transmitted infection—both in the U.S. and worldwide—and causes oral, laryngeal, cervical, and anorectal cancers. However, Gardasil-9, the HPV vaccine, can prevent over 90% of cancers caused by the virus, and it has helped lower rates of precancerous cervical lesions and genital warts in the adolescent population. Despite this, only 59% of eligible adolescents have received the vaccine, which is far below Healthy People 2030’s goal of 80%. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement an evidence-based text message campaign to increase HPV vaccination completion rates in a small primary care clinic among adolescents aged 11-15 years. In effort to increase HPV series completion rates at this clinic, the text message campaign included sending a text to eligible families (N=48) stating that their second dose of HPV vaccination was due, along with a link to the CDC website for more vaccine information. After 10 weeks, 23% of eligible adolescents aged 11-15 years completed the HPV vaccination series. Roughly 17% have future appointments scheduled later this year. Results from this project were in congruence with the current literature that text message reminders are a useful strategy to increase HPV vaccination rates.
