Abstract

Following the publication, in 1903, of the “Preliminary Review of the Birds of Nebraska,” wherein the writer, in collaboration with Professor Lawrence Bruner and Dr. R. H. Wolcott, set forth the status of this state’s avifauna as at that time understood, there arose a strong demand for a work along similar lines dealing with the mammals of the state. For the last ten years or more the writer has given considerable general attention to the local mammalian fauna, and of recent years has devoted much time to a systematic study of these creatures. Consequently when, in the spring of 1905, Professor Bruner suggested that a manual of the mammals of Nebraska be prepared in response to this demand, the task was taken up, but owing to frequent and extensive interruptions and a paucity of available time, it has only now been completed.
