FIRST PARAGRAPH(S)|The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is a journal originated by physicists at the University of Chicago, my alma mater, where the atomic bomb was conceived, under the football field at Stagg Field, the initial laboratory of what came to be the Manhattan Project.|These physicists, many having profound second thoughts about the ethical implications of what they had done, established a journal dedicated to nuclear disarmament and the avoidance, somehow, of nuclear war.|The cover of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists depicts the hands of a clock, with the little hand, indicating the hour always at 12:00 midnight - the end of the day - or the era - or the world. The large hand, indicating the minutes before midnight, had been placed nearer or farther from nuclear war, depending upon our closeness to nuclear Armageddon, in the minds of the nuclear scientists...
