FIRST PARAGRAPH(S)|As a biracial child growing up in Virginia in the late 20th and early 21st century, I was never sure where I belonged on a racial spectrum. I was born to a white woman from California and a black man from Louisiana, who raised my siblings and me with a sense of familial belonging; however, while always knowing that I belonged to a biracial family, outside of the family home, I did not have a sense of belonging to any racial community.
