Abstract

Dear Mr. Shearer: Thank you for letting me in on the information that you are honoring Father John Markoe on April 3rd. If it were not for my accelerated pro¬ gram, due to the attendance at the Council (for three months each year over the last three years), and trying to prepare for September, I would be happy to be with you. I want you to know how sincerely I appreciate your invitation to act as one of the honorary Chairmen for this worthy event, and gladly accept. I consider it a great privilege to call Father Markoe my friend. He is really a great Priest. Like his Master, he has been interested in the poor, the needy, and the disfranchised, and with the Heart of the Master, he loves all of God's children and has spent his life in helping them. A few years' ago, I had the chance to see his work at close range in Omaha, and I really appreciated even more how he has been the friend of all. On one occasion, Father Markoe took time off to come to this missionary diocese of North Carolina to help me with the Orientation of our Seminarians, some of whom are now Priests and who still remember him. My last visit with him was at the White House Conference, a few years' ago, when he had a special sit with his old classmate the President, Dwight D. Eisenhower. I thought at the time how much more of a permanent nature Father Markoe's work had been than that of the General and President of our own United States. May God bless Father Markoe and I will have him in my Mass on April 3rd, when you are honoring him, and he will be in my thoughts and prayers. Wishing each of you, all of God's choicest blessings, and congratulations on the wonderful idea, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Vincent S. Waters Vincent S.
