Abstract
"Your Excellency: As Catholic mother, responsible before God for the Catholic education of my children, I am appealing to you for help in a matter of conscience. This is the only recourse I have left. I have already appealed to my Pastor without avail. The account of my experience with him is enclosed herewith. Next I appealed to my Archbishop only to be rebuffed. An account of my interview with him is also enclosed. These two documents referred to above are in the form of letters addressed to the Rev. Claude H. Heithaus, S.J., a member of the faculty of St. Louis University, to whom, in my desperation, I next appealed to for help. He consulted his Superior about my case and was, as a result, forbidden by him to further advise or help me. So, Your Excellency, I an now appealing to you for help as a last recourse. I am prepared, it you so instruct me, to come to Washington, D. C., and to give you full details as to the systematic discrimination against Negroes that has been going on for years in this Archdiocese, in scandalous violation of the solemn and explicit teaching of the Vicar of Christ in His two encyclicals, Summi Pontificatus and Sertum Laetitiae"". Very humbly and Respectfully yours"
