Abstract
What we have here is a schoolbook for English-speaking children to learn French using ninety-nine classic fables of Aesop and La Fontaine presented in French prose. Fables are often introduced with a moral from La Fontaine. The work, first published in 1751, seems to have been regularly republished. We have one such edition from 1807. ABE is selling copies from 1776, 1800, and 1810. There is a T of C of these numbered fables on x-xii. The fables begin on 1 after 28 introductory pages. I am surprised by the moral for FG, #28 on 23: "Il est de la prudence de faire de nécessité vertu." La Fontaine asks if he was not smart. This translation answers definitively. A half-page of abbreviations and then an extensive unpaginated dictionary follows the finish of the fables on 98. The last element in the book consists of some 27 pages of advertisements for other publications. The front cover has separated from this unillustrated little (3¼" x 6") book.
