Perceptions of Gender Inequality in Athletic Leadership Roles Within the NCAA

Abstract

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of female athletic directors during the pursuit of their careers after the passing of Title IX. The aim was to create an informative guide that would provide recommendations to support women who aspire to become an athletic director at the collegiate level. Using a phenomenological approach, the study examined the lived experiences of 12 female athletic directors who currently work at an NCAA member institution. The results of this study have provided four major themes: Aligning a Cultural Fit, Commitment to Family, Overcoming Gender Barriers, and Developing a Strong Professional Network. These are influential factors related to the success of female athletic directors during the pursuit of their careers. This study has provided insight for future athletic directors, along with awareness of current athletic programs as to the inequality of male and female athletic directors present within most collegiate athletic programs.|Keywords: female, NCAA, athletic director, gender barriers
