Abstract
I have been a fan of Jean Effel for a long time. His real name is Francois Lejeune; his pseudonym comes from using "Jean" with his initials. Born and died in Paris, 1908-1982. Described as a caricaturist, illustrator, journalist, and political commentator. He had close relationships with both Russia and Czechoslovakia. Perhaps that is part of what I perceive to be the popularity of his La Fontaine illustrations in the Communist bloc. This book does one little thing for the collection. By the use of its very first illustration, it clarifies a postcard by giving it a text. The illustration is here on the first page of illustrations in an unpaginated book. La Fontaine is walking energetically into the woods when a crow cries out "Watch out! Here comes a spy!" That text makes more sense of a Russian postcard in the collection without text, at least on the picture side of the postcard. While I delight in the rest of the one-to-a-page cartoons in this lovely little book, I have not found anything else in it directly related to fables. I am frankly happy to be able to include it in the collection.
