INTRODUCTION|The world has changed quite dramatically in the last forty years. Many of these changes are quite obvious and easily recognizable. New fashions have emerged as preferences for clothing, music, art, literature, and cinema have evolved. In the political arena, the world has seen the rise and fall of governments and conflicts. New inventions have broken down communication barriers and continue to redefine the way humans interact with each other. Beyond the readily observable changes in life and culture over the last forty years, the world has changed in other less apparent ways. These more discrete changes, which can be characterized as definitional expansion, result at least in part from technological advances breaking down age-old barriers of what things are.
