Paid family and medical leave policy is a topical policy debate in the United States. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 was enacted
as an effort to address the lack of a uniform family and medical leave policy in the United States, but the legislation only guarantees unpaid leave as opposed to paid leave. Currently, paid family and medical leave policy has not been enacted at the federal level. Since the implementation of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, seven American states-California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New York, Washington, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, in addition to the District of Columbia-have enacted their own versions of paid family and medical leave legislation.
