Abstract

Here is an early edition of a simple book by a third publisher. There is an apparently earlier edition, the original one, by Julia MacRae in 1985. I have just ordered a copy. The two later editions, which we already have, were done by Beech Tree in 1991 and HarperTrophy in 2000. A good book travels! This "Trumpet Special Edition" by Scholastic is slightly smaller in format than the others and "is only available for distribution through the school market." It has one title-page fewer than the Beech Tree and HarperTrophy editions and so has 58 rather than 56 pages. As I wrote of the Beech Tree edition, this is an ingenious and well-written book which tells the puzzle-tales just right, from "How can you get the wolf, goat, and cabbage across the river unharmed?" to good detective stories. Aesop's CP fits right in. Another surprising place where Aesop is right at home!
