Abstract

This pamphlet, 5¾" x 8", features sixteen full-page orange monochrome illustrations. For the first fifteen, the illustration takes up the left-hand page, while La Fontaine's text is on the right-hand page. In the sixteenth case, the text of GGE is inserted in a text box in the upper right-hand corner of the picture on the pamphlet's last page. The motifs seem common in popular presentations of La Fontaine, as in the case of GGE. We have again here the disgruntled, disappointed farmer sitting on a bench with the dead goose held between his legs. The illustrations are vigorous but are not great art. The artist has difficulty with animal faces. On the front cover, two children sit reading together in a chair. I have trouble dating this pamphlet. I could find no information on Rimbaut Freres except that a street in Tournai is named after them. Here is an emphemeral object that we saved from the trash barrel and bonfire!
