Abstract

What a curious and lovely volume! Out of affection for their home-grown storyteller, some Danish people got together in 1944 -- a remarkable year, to say the least -- to publish this collection of "The Emperor's New Clothes" in 25 languages. The languages and their page numbers are listed in a T of C at the end. Just as engaging as the texts are the illustrations, taken from versions in the language where they appear. There is a list of them just after the T of C. My favorite is the German illustration on 63, which has a little boy pointing to the strutting, naked emperor. The illustrations are thus of various sorts. The Chinese emperor looks and dresses like someone from China. This volume is losing is spine, and so it is good that it is boxed. What a delight!
