Abstract

Here is a 32-page 2-staple pamphlet (5" x 6½") presenting, as the closing T of C shows, a foreword and ten fables. Each fable gets a full-page black-and-white drawing. The selection attests to the most popular of Krylov's fables. The only surprise for me is "The Mouse and the Rat." The rat delivers the surprising answer to the mouse's exultation that the lion caught the cat. "If they fight, there will not be much left of the lion. No animal is mightier than the cat." So says the rat…. My hat is off to anyone in Russia publishing fable books in 1945!
