Abstract
INTRODUCTION|In the United States more than thirty billion dollars is spent each year for prescription medications. There are today four times as many prescription medications available as there were in 1961. In 1988, 1.63 billion prescriptions were dispensed by pharmacies in the United States, up from 1.38 billion in 1983.|The increase in prescription volume has also increased the number of personal injuries caused by adverse reactions to drugs. Many of these injuries occur because physicians and pharmacists inadequately communicate drug information to patients. One study has found that 72% of consumers were given an insufficient amount of information about their prescriptions. The lack of counseling by pharmacists has resulted in over one hundred million prescriptions not being refilled and has caused over 4.5 billion dollars in added hospital costs. As a result, one of the burgeoning areas of medical malpractice involves the pharmacist's failure to counsel patients...
