Abstract

I first encountered the author's " L'Agneau qui avait une faim de loup: Fable à ma fontaine" from 2021 and liked it so much that I investigated what else she had done. Here is one part of the result. This 2018 book from the same publisher, likewise unusual in size at 9" x 13¼", has the same feature of a partial cut-out covering some of the title-page, in this case with leaves replicating those on the endpapers. In this version of OF, we see a huge ox enjoying eating and lounging and happy to be himself. He soon arrives at a gorgeous pool, beautifully represented by a double fold-out of a wordless pond scene. Soon a splash disturbs the paradise-like peace of the ox. It is a beautiful female frog swimming, dancing, plunging like an acrobat. This experience speaks to the ox's sense of his corpulent self. At first he is outraged at his size and its complexity; how great it would be to dance, even to dance with her! He tumbles around, who cares how he looks. Soon he approaches the water, squeezes his glutes, and SPLASH! A large pop-out presents his plunge. That plunge chases the frog away. Sad that he does not resemble the beautiful frog, he returns to pasture, fat and greasy. He gobbles up all sorts of hay, so much that no page could express it. And indeed, a blank pair of pages communicates that view well! "Comparison with others is not very fruitful!"
