Abstract

Patience paid off. Three years earlier, I found Volume II on eBay. Now I found its mate through ZVAB. The cover's Onkel Max erzählt Fabeln is again confusing since the title-page says nothing about Onkel Max. (He is mentioned in the introduction.) As I wrote about the partner volume, this is a typical large-format French post-WWII edition containing ten fables. In fact, the same publisher did publish these two volumes in French the following year. The long German prose text for each fable is on the left-hand page, with a full-page illustration on the right. The book has a canvas binding. The illustrations are lively and engaging. Perhaps the two best are Die Löwe und die Mücke and TB. The artist bypasses the usual moment chosen for depicting WL and shows instead the wolf carrying the lamb off into the wounds to devour him. The cover illustration here is a lively version of TT. There is an advertisement for the second volume on the last page.
