Abstract

The eBay seller had written "Large folio book in landscape measuring 41x27.5cm approx., original paper boards with spine missing, book holding together well. Half title present, main title present, full page engravings, each with corresponding text, 24 engravings, 2 of which are hand coloured. old water stain to the edge of 5 pages." I will add that this is an impressive landscape book 16" x 10⅞" with very heavy paper. Bodemann describes it as the first lithographed fable book. Bodemann sees different styles in the two main engravers, Vernet (freer use of the new medium) and LeComte (more traditional copper engraving). Among my favorites here are LeComte’s OR; WL; and "The Schoomaster and the Child"; Horace Vernet's CW; and Carle Vernet’s "The Two Mules"; CW; "The Horse Wanting to Get Revenge on the Stag"; and "The Coach and the Fly." Bodemann speaks of a two-volume work with 132 engravings, but I find no indication of that here. This is a lovely book to show from the collection, exactly 200 years old.
