Abstract

As part of the first C-Unity Week celebration on campus the Outreach and Programming Team provided educational and social programs that advanced the cultural and social understanding of diversity at Creighton and in our Omaha community. A central activity was developed that would act as an opportunity to bring together the community through art and create opportunities to dialogue about aspects of diversity in our community. The result was The C-Unity Mural Project, a community mural approximately 9’ x 50’ long, depicting imagery generated by Creighton and Omaha community ideations and imagery. The project was led by local Artist Mike Girón, who brought to life the general themes of the mural: what acts as barriers in our communities, what connects us, and how to interact with each other in the process of a common goal - conveyed to form in the mural. Participants in the project shared and gathered thoughts on this theme on paper and photography. Many visual representations where brought from these lists. The painting of the mural was done by Omaha high school students, Creighton students, and staff.
