Mr. Kniazev saw the Georgetown magazine article, got my phone number from the university, and called to offer this book. It has been very helpful because it gave me a firm first date for this book. I have since learned that Weir first created fifty illustrations for a Routledge edition of 300 fables of Aesop translated by Townsend in 1865. Two years later Routledge published an edition using 114 Weir illustrations with the same texts. Some years later, publishers like Lippincott used a set of over 350 fables, forty of which were simply taken from Croxall and placed at the end of Townsend's collection of 300 (actually 313). This edition is typical of the many reprintings of the Weir illustrations, which seem to have become less defined with each printing. Poor quality paper also hurts the illustrations.
