Abstract

The purpose of foreign aid is to promote economic development among developing countries. Many scholars contend that foreign aid has failed to achieve this goal. There is a widespread body of literature, which attempts to address this failure. I investigate the relationship between economic development and conditionality agreements on foreign aid to illustrate the ineffectiveness of the current aid system. Conditionality agreements limit a recipient country by restricting mobility and exhausting valuable resources. In order to receive aid, recipient countries often have to meet requirements that are outside of their capacity, which hinders economic growth. My findings support this conclusion.
