Abstract
What one finds in this German reader for American Catholic Children in 1910 must seem to us today a curious gathering of elements: practice letters to parents and relatives; various mottos and aphorisms; prayers to guardian angels; explanations of the American flag's stars and stripes; exhortations to obeying one's parents; some pious stories; and a few fables. Almost all of the 90 numbered elements on 158 pages are in German with some English vocabulary. The fables included here are Al (61) and "Die Eichel und der Kürbis" (117), each with a black-and-white illustration. This book has a personal meaning to me. It may well have been with such books that my father was taught at St. Boniface School in Milwaukee some years after this publication date. This copy has been well used and has lost almost all of its spine.
