Abstract

"Originally published in French as "Paraboles et Fariboles" in 1978. This good book of things to think over starts with a "Gebrauchsanweisung: Nicht alles auf einmal anschauen. Sich an die vorgeschriebene Dosis halten. Einmal täglich ein bis zwei Tropfen." Not too much at once! A little bit at a time! In my opinion, these provocative stories are more parables than fables. They invite us to reflect. The title story (12-13) quotes the scripture and then asks "What kind of field is that in which such a precious treasure lies buried? We ourselves, our own interior. God is buried there. He offers himself however only to us if we happily give him everything." That handling of the story typifies, I believe, Loew's handling of his stories. They are slightly forced and slightly didactic. "Here is what you need to do." Better if the story itself makes that clear to us. Thus the fascinating cover illustration belongs to the story "Landung im Blindflug" (20-21). The narration takes us through the flying experience of taking off through clouds and again landing through them. "So ist es auch mit dem Glauben. Er führt uns bie völliger Sichtlosigkeit genau dahin, wo sich Gottes Verheissungen erfüllen sollen." I would have wished that the story itself could have spoken without an allegorical interpretation. But these may be lovers' quarrels. He so much does what I want stories to do."
