I am sorry that I cannot remember where or when I got this book. I am not even sure that it should be called a fable. I love the story and the artist, and that may influence my decision. Ping is great at raising flowers. The emperor needs a successor and gives each child a flower seed. He promises to take as successor the child who can show him his or her best in a year. Despite his best efforts, Ping's seed does not bloom, and he has to bring an empty pot to the final show. You will have to read the book to find out what happens then! Demi's work is enchanting. Originally published in hardback by Holt in 1990.
