Abstract

The first two volumes of Pierre Ruelle's "Recueil Général des Isopets," from 1982 covering Macho appeared in 1929, and here they are. This valuable gathering of medieval collections includes, in this volume, Neckam and the Isopets of Paris and Chartres -- Latin for the former and French for both of the latter. Neckam's "Novus Aesopus" was apparently the source for the latter two. Valuable early material includes a classification of Isopets (i) and a table of correspondence of the three presented here (1). This paperbound version has this notice facing the title page of each volume: "Cette exemplaire a eté tiré pour la bibliothéque de M. Lawrence Slade." Slade's name and elements on the title page are in red ink, and the paper is, as the bookseller notes, "special." The volume's own note on the verso of the title-page reads "Tiré à vingt-cinq exemplaires sur ce papier." I felt lucky to find these volumes after my searching was done at Commonwealth. The pair was reduced from $150 to $60, and there was a 20% off sale going on. Many uncut pages.
