Abstract

I am surprised not to have come across this little paperback earlier. The selection of English-language fables is delightful and appropriately broad. Authors include Thomas Carlyle, Stephen Crane, John Dryden, E.M. Forster, John Gay, Rudyard Kipling, William Saroyan, Robert Louis Stevenson, Jonathan Swift, James Thurber, and Mark Twain. English texts are on the left-hand pages, and German translations on the right-hand pages. Frieda Wiegand adds small but pleasant designs along the way. 127 pages. T of C at the beginning and biographical notes at the end. New to me among them all are, for example, Carlyle's "Hen, Poodle, Scullion" (8); Saroyan's "Turtle and Lion, Flea and Elephant" (82); Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Citizen and the Traveller" (86); and Mark Twain's "The Mirror" (112).
