Abstract
The current political environment around health care reform provides a unique opportunity for experientially and educationally prepared nurses to engage in the health policy process. This article describes an innovative approach to advanced public health policy nursing education utilizing the Culture of Health Framework (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2016) as the conceptual framework for the Doctor of Nursing Practice in Public Health Policy (DNP-PHP). The Culture of Health as a conceptual framework for the DNP-PHP program emerged from the synthesis of ideas from participation in nursing and health care initiatives, cross-sector collaboration, and practice in academia. Students in the DNP-PHP program will develop skills for advocacy, innovation in population-based health care, and transforming health policy. The DNP-PHP prepares nurse leaders to be the change agents needed to advocate, educate, and translate research to enhance the practice of population-based health care and influence policy making.
