Integration of AI into Nursing Curricula: The Role of the Nurse Educator

Abstract

Background AI has the potential to enhance knowledge retention, critical thinking, and decision-making. However, adoption of AI into nursing education raises ethical concerns including risks of over-reliance, data privacy issues, and inequitable access. Nurse educators play a crucial role in the integration of AI into the nursing curricula while still needing to address these challenges and uphold the human-centric values of the nursing profession.

Sample/Setting This analysis applies to nursing education settings, emphasizing the role of nurse educators in preparing students for an AI-enhanced healthcare landscape.

Methods Due to challenges associated with integration of AI that nurse educators are likely to face, this paper fuses both the five stages of Diffusion of Innovation with the Principles of Biomedical Ethics to provide a comprehensive framework which allows the technical and ethical complications of Ai integration to be addressed while maintaining the values of the nursing profession.

Results As Rogers’ theory provides the roadmap for adoption of AI, with emphasis on the role of nurse educators as early adopters to reduce uncertainty and foster change, Beauchamp and Childress’ principles ensure that the integration of AI is also guided by ethical values, promoting informed decision-making, equitable access, and minimization of harm. Recommendations for educators include taking comprehensive training courses, embedding AI ethics into the curricula, piloting AI tools on a small-scale, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.

Conclusion The fusion of Rogers’ and Beauchamp and Childress’ frameworks provides a comprehensive approach to integrating AI into nursing curricula, and equips educators and students to navigate the opportunities and challenges of a healthcare landscape in which AI is being increasingly adapted for many uses. It is imperative that nurse educators provide their students with this education as AI becomes a staple of nursing practice.
