Schöne Fabeln für jung und alt
Alternative Title
Abstract
"Mit vierzig, darunter acht farbigen Holzschnitten." I note many surprises as I examine this paperback book. First, I am surprised that I have not encountered it until now. I suspect that it is identical with a book in the collection published by another publisher. Secondly, I am surprised at the wide range of fabulists presented here, as is shown in the closing T of C. Thirty-two fabulists appear here, including Aesop, the Jatakas and the Panchatantra, La Fontaine and Krylov. A third surprise is very pleasant: the eight strong colored old woodcuts. Several of these at least come from the Indian tradition, like the story of the evil crow who has feasted on fish now being strangled by a lobster (16). The final surprise comes in the good renditions of many Steinhöwel woodcuts without coloring. The cover presents a simple and strong Steinhöwel illustration of FC.
