Abstract

Here is a 90-year old paperbound book, unillustrated except for its frontispiece of J. de Magallon. As its closing T of C shows, it has 50 fables on some 246 pages. It offers "Bambou" text on each left-hand page, with a classical French translation on each right. Apparently, "Les Bambous" was first published in 1846. According to the cover and identical title-page, this 1931 edition is revised and augmented by a literary notice and by the French translation of Louis Jamah-Desrivaux. Might the original have been written by Francois Marbot, not mentioned here but credited with the work in "Zayann" in 2000? One can pick out perhaps a French word or two in each verse of the Bambou. This book makes a pleasant addition to the collection. It pleases me particularly to save another fragile paperbound book from, as Hopkins would say, "world's wildfire"! Among the questions raised by this book is: "Why the mention on the cover and title-page of "Un Vieux Commandeur"? Is that the original author or reporter? The translator?
