Effectiveness of LSVT BIG on Functional Mobility for Individuals with PD

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Parkinson’s disease [PD] is a neurodegenerative disease that effects numerous people in the United States. Individuals with PD experience symptoms like bradykinesia, muscle rigidity, and tremors which impact their ability to engage in daily activities and quality of life. Extra support from caregivers, the healthcare system, and society is required to serve these individuals. Alternate interventions, like Lee Silverman Voice Treatment BIG [LSVT BIG], may improve functional mobility for individuals with PD. AIM: This critically appraised topic (CAT) is aimed to determine the effectiveness of LSVT BIG on improving functional mobility for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. METHODS: Level I, II, and III studies were analyzed and included in the CAT if they were published in the last 10 years, included LSVT-BIG interventions, included outcomes related to functional mobility, and included participants that had PD. RESULTS: Level I, II, and III research completed with patients with PD shown moderate levels of evidence regarding the effectiveness of LSVT BIG on improving functional mobility.
