Abstract

This is a collection of three short stories written during my time at Creighton University’s MFA program. “Estonian Underground” is a coming of age story about two brothers, Daniil and Sasha, who explore an abandoned, underground Soviet bunker as Daniil struggles to overcome his childhood fears. “Trophy Hunting” is about a wealthy American hunter, Ray, who pays the chief of a Malawi village, Bomani to help him poach an albino lioness. “Arrivederci, Venezia” is about the friendship between Reto and Daryl on the former’s last night in Venice. These stories explore themes of growing up, neocolonialism, modernity, friendship, belonging, and new beginnings.
