Abstract

Primary care providers (PCP) see patients with a wide variety of diseases and disorders. Mental health disorders are commonly identified and diagnosed by the PCP in the outpatient setting. The clinic of interest routinely used the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) to screen for depression but had no standardized screening tool for anxiety disorders. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7) is a free standardized tool that is commonly used by the PCP in the outpatient setting. The providers at Family HealthCare were given access to the GAD-7 to use in their office with their patients at their discretion. They were then given information regarding implications and interpretation of the GAD-7 followed by a survey to measure their attitudes towards the tool. The providers reported that the tool is useful in their practice but identified obstacles to fully integrated use including time limitations and system barriers.
