Abstract

In the Spirit of Collaboration, an afterschool health literacy program was developed in 2010-11 by faculty and students in the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions and the Office of Interprofessional Scholarship, Service, and Education in partnership with Holy Name School. Our community partner, Holy Name School, has 148 students in Kindergarten through 8th grades. The goal of the project is to teach life skills to children so they will have the tools to live a healthy life. The school principal identified basic health- and self-care information as a priority need because many of the students may not get this information at home. The project was created to provide health information on a variety of topics to students during an afterschool program. Creighton students work in teams leading interactive presentations for the Holy Name students. Creighton students follow a curriculum that includes a brief health education presentation, hands-on learning activities, and physical activities. Educational handouts detailing the health education topic are also provided to parents.
