Abstract

This is one of the most unusual objects in the book collection. I admit that I was not sure what "dessins originaux fait à la main, par la personne qui a relié le livre (travail artisinal)." Yes, it means that someone took the pains to cut out a fable text for 80 of La Fontaine's fables and draw a two-page ink drawing for that fable, and bind the whole into a well-made book, complete with a T of C. The T of C is not, however, in absolute order. One senses the challenge of the bookbinder's task in the whole project! Particular illustrations that I found unusually well done include SS (17); "The Cat and Two Sparrows" (13); "Acorn and Pumpkin" (33); DW (50); MSA (54); and FG (70). Only right-hand pages are paginated: there are thus really 160 pages here. What a treat!
