Abstract
This is a delightful set of seven fables, each offered on a spread of two-pages, usually with a single illustration spreading across the two pages. There are some things to notice. A colorfully dressed grasshopper with a concertina in his sack comes to the ant in summer as she carries a load of sticks on her back. The gnat that bothers the lion is dressed as a swashbuckling soldier, while a Cossack spider with four legs in striped pants on his web. The rustic leads away the mule while the two thieves battle it out on the ground. The wolf in shepherd's clothing plays his flute for the sheep while the shepherd sleeps. In perhaps the liveliest image, the dog looks away with arms akimbo while the wolf chases the terrified mule. The tortoise leans into her walking with her scarf and babushka while the hare sleeps. The fox in his formal suitcoat speaks down to the puzzled goat in the well. I enjoy this book! Alternative scenes from each are located around a cameo of La Fontaine on the cover. Only the flautist wolf is omitted on this front cover, but then he shows up in the frontispiece facing the introduction.
