Abstract
Now here is something different! This heavy 12” x 9½” landscape-formatted book offers stimulating photography, most frequently of stuffed animals in palatial surroundings. Knorr has an eye for the beautiful but also for the provocative. The juxtapositions and postures raise questions and invite both whimsy and serious consideration. Some of my favorites as I walked through these large pages were the tortoise and hare and again the fox on a green settee in Musée Carnavalet; the stags locking into battle and again the "four birds on a balcony" in Chambord; the solitary flamingo in Musée Conde; and the heron outside as the last image from Villa Savoye. The two writers offer extended comments before and after the photographs, which are presented -- rightly -- without comment.
