Abstract

This pamphlet of 32 unpaginated pages almost replicates an edition of 1969 but adds to it a front and back cover. The inside back cover here illustrates what was there a text without illustration. The cover here features a crow in a tree and four cameos of principal animal characters from the fables. The verso of the front-cover is a gouache of Krylov in his red and black striped robe composing with a writing quill. Except for the date on the title-page, I note only one change. The young woman eating grapes facing the full-page illustration of FG has disappeared! Only the baskets of freshly plucked grapes remain! Now what had been the cover there is the title-page here, and it still has a small illustration of a monkey holding a mirror. The illustrations are strong and colorful. Often there is an echo of the facing full-page illustration on the text page. For example, a female monkey points to a mirror on the right-hand page while a male bear looks on in the full-page illustration to the left. 8⅜" x 10⅞"
