Abstract

This 12-page pamphlet is almost exactly the same as a copy found fifteen years ago. A pleasant red cover shows the animals of La Fontaine's best known fables gathered around a cream-colored book showing the pamphlet's title. Inside we find, after a page of advertising for Tisane Cisbey: OF; LM; FC; GA; "Le Laboureur et ses Enfants"; WL; and DS with a single illustration. Most stories have at least a pair of two-colored illustrations. FC has five illustrations, all well done. In our copy acquired earlier, the inside back-cover is pasted over with a simple statement saying that Tisane Cisbey has fifty years of success in combating constipation. I wrote then that I would love to know what got pasted over. Well, here is just what I wanted! Some detective work shows that what appears as the inside back cover here is what got pasted over there. Part of my theory back then does not quite work out. I thought that Laboratoires Beytout may have bought out Laboratoires Cisbey. The original inside back cover, that is, the one in this copy, has Laboratoires Beytout. Might then this inside back cover have been standard issue, say, from 1940, and someone got the bright idea to celebrate an anniversary without having to print a new booklet?
