Abstract
Cellophane Bruise is a collection of poems using the act of speech to examine relationships and questions how the speaker reconciles his private self with his public self. Poems explore themes of grief (e.g., “Three Sketches of Someone Who Will Die Young” and “This Is Not a Funeral Procession”), failed romantic relationships (e.g., “To Feel Like Jessica Lange” and “Slow Smoke Pirouette”), and mental illness (e.g., “Kate Bush Dreams of Sheep” and “Map of My Anxieties”). These poems employ both invented and received poetic forms as a way of embodying those themes.
