This retreat was given at the Demontreville Jesuit Retreat House near Lake Elmo, Minnesota, in August of 2010.
Fr. Kersten has a Ph.D. in International Communication from the University of Wisconsin -Madison. He also holds degrees iFr. Kersten has a Ph.D. in International Communication from the University of Wisconsin -Madison. He also holds degrees in Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, Television Production and Aesthetics from San Francisco State University, and English Literature from St. Louis University. Fr. Kersten served as Assistant Secretary General of Unda, the International Catholic Association for Radio and Television from 1974-1977, and as Executive Director of the Jesuit Secretariat for Communications and the Media Apostolate, East Asia, for eight years, beginning in 1981. For 15 years, Fr. Kersten taught at the Jesuit Sogang University in Seoul, Korea. He was director of Sogang's Communication Center from 1981-1989, during which he produced over fifty video documentaries on themes related to faith and justice.
Fr. Kersten left Korea in 1990 for a special assignment from Jesuit Superior General Father Peter Hans Kolvenbach, to assess the Centre for the Study of Communication and Culture (CSCC), and then to relocate it from London, where it was established as an international Jesuit work, to Saint Louis University. This assessment & relocation were completed in June of 1993. As CSCC Director, Fr. Kersten published the academic quarterly Communication Research Trends and coordinated two book series, Communication and Human Values (Sage) and Communication, Culture, and Theology (Sheed & Ward). Fr. Kersten also has professional experience as a TV Documentary Producer/Director, Sound Track Engineer, Station Manager, in theater production and direction, and as a musician.
