Abstract
Here are twenty fables in a large (12" x 8½") landscape book that comes with a box revealing its pasted-in cover image of tree and reeds. Each fable gets a four-page suite. The first page has a small colored image, a number (1 to 20), and a title. Second and fourth pages present text on the left. The third page is a large full-page image done perhaps in pastels. The first presents the face-to-face encounter of dog and wolf, with a clear line around the dog's neck. "The Rat Turned Monk" is dramatically shown with only face and tail peeping out of a large round cheese. WC shows only the crane with a bone in his beak. Nothing but a bit of tail shows the wolf. FS shows dramatically the fox lapping up the thin soup while the stork's bill is poised above the food. TT shows the frightened turtle in mid-air as the geese fly on. The size and approach of these illustrations creates a strong sense of drama. This illustrator took the fables seriously! The drawback here: when he shows only one animal, we miss the tension of the scene. This was a happy find in my first day of searching in Lisbon!
