Abstract
This book of 113 + 7 pages is a lovely addition to the collection, especially for two reasons. First, it is unusual to find a Russian book of fables that does not come from or through Krylov. I had not been aware that Tolstoy told this many Aesopic fables, and there are 69 of them here! Secondly, the artistry here is wonderfully engaging. Among the best pairs of colored illustrations are TMCM (30-31); "Lion, Bear, and Fox" (54-55); GA (60-61); GGE, with the farmer finishing off a chicken bone (62-63); FG (70-71); and WC (80-81). I do not think I have ever before seen the mouse escape the frog (15)! Does that not vitiate Aesop's use of the story just before his execution? There is a T of C at the end of the five books here.
