Abstract

Here is the first volume, in excellent condition, of a series of some 28 volumes of childhood literature from around the world. A T of C after an introductory illustration of "The Fox and the Wolf" shows 26 fables on some 123 pages, followed by three pages on Aesop and a colophon page. First published in 1966, there were further printings or editions in 1979 and 1985 before this printing in 1986. The illustrations, well typified by BF on 9, are strong water-colors interspersed with black-and-white and duochrome. Another good example of the colored work is LM on 28-29. An even more glorious BF is on 38-39. DS on 48 does well with the dog's reflection in the water. And what a gala feast the mice enjoy in the city on 118-19! This lively artistic style flourished fifty years ago and seems gone now.
