Abstract
FIRST PARAGRAPH(S)|I want to talk to you tonight about the future of civil rights after six difficult years under the Reagan Administration. My message is fairly straight-forward. First, I am happy to report that civil rights advocates have generally been able to hold the line and protect hard won gains for blacks, other minorities, and women against a furious assault by the current Administration. Second, we have won victories but not without casualties, some that it will take years, if not decades, to overcome. And third, those of us who believe in the cause of civil rights have to remember that, as Thomas Jefferson said, "eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." America will stay on the right course only if we make it happen...
