Abstract

Here is a curious find. It combines a first half of La Fontaine's fables first published in An VII but now labelled 1817 with a second half still labelled An VII. Not only do I have copies of both halves, but I have just catalogued the second half. Thus I could easily recognize the family relationship in these volumes. As I wrote of the first volume, this is a small book (4 x 5¾) first done in An VII, i.e., the seventh year after the revolution. The match of the second volume with the first volume is not exact. This combined volume follows on both title-pages the indication of the publisher in the second volume, that is, L'Imprimerie et la Fonderie Stéréotypes de Pierre Didot l'Ainé et de Firmin Didot. The original first volume had as its publisher only L'Imprimerie de P. Didot l'Ainé. French Wikipedia seems to indicate that François Didot founded a dynasty of printers. He died in 1757. François-Ambroise Didot, Didot l'ainé, lived from 1730 to 1804. Firmin Didot, 1764-1836, is the best known member of the family. He is celebrated with a statue in the façade of the Hotel de Ville. It is still unclear to me when Firmin Didot moved into the family business and helped change its name. Both volumes here add to Édition Stéréeotype the helpful D'après le précedé de Firmin Didot. This little book's front cover has separated, and the back cover will not be far behind. There is one illustration at the beginning of Book 1.There is a printer's design at the beginning of Book 7.
